Magnesium Forms Explained: Glycinate, Citrate and Oxide
18 July 2026 · 5 min read

Magnesium supplements are always a magnesium salt or chelate. The label figure that matters is elemental magnesium per serve, not the total compound weight.
Magnesium oxide is inexpensive and high in elemental magnesium by weight, but is less well absorbed and more likely to have a laxative effect.
Magnesium citrate is well absorbed and commonly used. Magnesium glycinate is chelated to the amino acid glycine and is often chosen for tolerability.
Check whether the recommended daily serve is one capsule or several — cost per serve can shift dramatically.
If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional. Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
