How to Read a Pre-Workout Label Before You Buy

Start with caffeine. Australian pre-workouts commonly contain 150–300mg per serve. For context, a double-shot espresso is roughly 120–150mg. Check the per-serve figure, not the per-100g figure.

Next, check whether active ingredients are individually disclosed. A 'proprietary blend' that lists only a total weight makes it impossible to know whether the dose of any single ingredient is meaningful.

Beta-alanine causes a harmless tingling sensation (paraesthesia) in many people at doses above roughly 2g. It is expected, not a sign of potency.

Note the serving scoop size and total servings so you can compare cost per serve rather than cost per tub.

Pre-workouts are not suitable for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or people sensitive to caffeine. Avoid use close to bedtime. Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Speak with your doctor or pharmacist before starting a new supplement, particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a health condition.
