Whey protein isolate (WPI) is whey that has been microfiltered to remove almost all fat, lactose and carbohydrate, leaving a powder that is typically 90% protein by weight. It is the benchmark fast-digesting protein for post-training nutrition.
What is whey protein isolate?
Whey is the liquid fraction of milk separated during cheese-making. Through cross-flow microfiltration, the protein is isolated from most of the lactose, fat and minerals. The result is a light, low-lactose powder with a complete amino acid profile and very high leucine content per serve.
The science
WPI empties from the stomach quickly and raises blood amino acid levels within about 30–60 minutes. That rapid spike in essential amino acids — particularly leucine — is the trigger that switches on muscle protein synthesis, the process your body uses to repair and rebuild muscle tissue after training. Because isolate is so low in lactose, most people who struggle with standard whey tolerate it well.
